Bougainvillea is a genus of thorny ornamental vines, bushes, and trees belonging to the four o' clock family, Nyctaginaceae. It is native to eastern South America, found from Brazil, west to Peru, and south to southern Argentina. The inflorescence consists of large colourful sepal-like bracts which surround three simple waxy flowers, gaining popularity for the plant as an ornamental. The actual flower of the plant is small and generally white, but each cluster of three flowers is surrounded by three or six bracts with the bright colours associated with the plant, including pink, magenta, purple, red, orange, white, or yellow. Bougainvillea glabra is sometimes called "paper flower" because its bracts are thin and papery. The fruit is a narrow five-lobed achene.

Interesting:
One of the most popular ornamentals in India and in warm regions throughout the world. This beauty features a special Shari trunk. Artists create shari by carving or stripping bark and then treat it with lime sulfur to bleach it white and prevent rot, adding dramatic character.

CARE GUIDE:

Light: The bougainvillea needs full sun and high temperatures for producing flowers and for that reason it should be placed outside in a sunny place during the growing season.

Water: Water the bougainvillea thoroughly when the soil gets dry, but avoid constant soil wetness which will lead to root rot, fungal problems, insect susceptibility and death.

SIZE:

Approx 22 x 23 inches ( Each plant is unique; size and shape fluctuate by season so all measurements are approximate)
